sadly is no longer there.......We enjoyed the walk up the hill to Sofia's (Wheelers Hill) many times through the 10yrs it was there.....It sold just when our home also sold, otherwise I would be really sad it was not there anymore. We are traveling from Mornington Peninsula to try Sofias in Frankston for the 1st time today....celebrating Fathers Day a day early. Smile

Never Never again!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have eaten at the Wheelers Hill Sofia's many times and have only ever once slightly queried one meal that was delivered to me. Immediately the manager arrived, apoligised and, more than was necessary, offered restitution. I would recommend it, and do, to others. With this in mind, my mother and I drove the 30 mins from Rosebud to Frankstone for an evening meal. Not leaving when we first entered was our first mistake!
The general presentation of the venue was dowdy, the airconditioner was set on far too high for comfort. Again, like others have posted here, we no sooner sat down, were given menus, and almost immediately asked if we were ready to order. I said that would take a few mins... so then we were virtually pushed into ordering drinks. After the waitress returned 3 times to take our order I told her i would let her know when we were ready.
When ready i called her over and went to order oysters ... oh we never have them on a Monday...so why not say that on the menu!!! We ordered our meals.. our flavorless meals...the fish platter was at least 80% calimari, with not a piece of lemon in sight to improve the flavor a tad!
My mothers Chicken, avocardo and seafood only scrapped by with that title because it had 2 prawns on it.
My Anti Pasto .,.which you would think an italian resturant would know how to prepare...but alas did not...was discusting! Apart from 2 pieces of salami and 2 unedible piece of greasy pastromi there was no other meats. The cheeses i am used to from Wheelers Hill were not there! I received 6 small cubes of feta and about a dessertspoon of tasty cheese served in scraps that looked like they had been srapped up from where they had cut cheese for another meal! Most of the other rubbish on the plate was just that rubbish! Gerkins that were not pickle and should have been and other vegetables that were pickled and should not have been. I left at least 75% on the plate.
Never Never will i return to that venue and will certainly be letting as many people that I can know of the very poor time I had there!

Abosulutely horrible restaurant.

The views of the bay are beautiful but I think next time I'd rather buy fish and chips and just sit on the beach than pay for such a horrible experience.

The elderly Italian waiter was so busy rudely yelling at other staff about moving tables, and interrupting us in accented English, that he got everything wrong. I ordered a glass of Sav blunc but got bought a bottle, then had to wait over 30 minutes for that to be changed. The garlic prawns came in a pasta plate and included just burned rice and so much sauce it looked like soup. The lamb salad was beyond drowning in lemon juice and my brother's order of a parmigiana with chips and veggies became TWO plates of parmigiana's - one with chips and one with veggies - then the offered bowl of chips to rectify the order NEVER turned up. When I booked the table I also asked to have a high chair for my toddler. What I got barely a one year old child could fit into, and when I pointed this out the waiter just waved us off rudely and said that I would have to 'deal' and offered no other explanation as to why.

Such a pity as the restaurant is in a prime location, but I'd never ever put myself through that again.

waste of time and money

I GOT TO SAY - WOW...
i've been told to head back to Sofia's Frankston as its been run by a new manager & YES, what an massive improvement.
The food was Fresh, Tasty and always massive... great leftovers for lunch the next day. and as always, the low pricing and big plates makes it GREAT VALUE. and may i suggest, on a nice winter night sitting in the heated decking tent; its so romatic like an Arabian Night, well worth the experiance. all in all a great new experiance.
so forget all the old stories & try them out again - for a casual night out with friends, partner or family, its well worth it.

The Staff may be attractive however it juxtaposes the old hospitality saying that you can teach a pretty girl to carry plates. Nah. Who is doing the Hiring?

Rushed to a table handed a menu 1 minute later asked to order. When asked for a bit more time. We got it about an hour and a half of it. They definitely have mastered the use of Harry Potters invisibility cloak and get smarts cone of silence.

However if the Cone of silence was working it was only one way. The ambiance was like dinning in the Dresden bombing raids of 45. It was so noisy that I suggest that you bring 2 cans and a piece of string if you are attempting a conversation. If your not interested in conversation then I suggest your I pod loaded with death metal on full with your head in a bucket of water just may do the trick.

When we finally ordered and then were treated to the same Agent 86 and Harry Potter routine. We heard the familiar Beep, Beep, Beep as they backed up and unloaded on the rather cramped table setting's.

The management could not possibly care less. You can feel the churn and burn business mentality. I am sure that it may be be a highly profitable business due to its location.

Give them cheap quantity over quality. It proves that a sucker is born every day.

It's a given that you would not go there for a 5 star dinning experience to start with. They maybe in the family / cafe market. However the boat has left the Pier and they have truly missed it.

Its not that hard to for them to improve the experience. But why would they they will get the suckers who are uneducated and hopelessly greedy. Just like themselves.

Its comforting in a way that nothing changes Bonn appetite.

We sat down and were given our menus. About all of 20 seconds later we were asked if we were ready to order. We asked if we could have a few minutes more. We were then soundly ignored for about 20 minutes while waiters milled around nearby clearing tables and so on until our order was finally taken by a decidely unfriendly waitress.

As we waited we were taken aback by the huge size of the meals being served to other patrons. When our meals came they were similarly of gigantic proportions.

Unfortunately "quantity" held sway over "quality". I had ordered a veal dish with veges. Instead of veal, my plate held three huge slabs of some kind of suspect but extremely chewy meat which was definitely not veal, but which could possibly have been chump chops or similar. Upon chewing, it grew in my mouth and this was complemented by the taste, which could only be described as bland. The massive amount of veges on the plate were, unfortunately, all rock hard and cold. There was some kind of insipid watery sauce/gravy with small blobs of orange fat swimming in it and the whole thing was just revolting. My friend's pasta dish was devoid of flavour but there was nevertheless enough to feed a small army.

We basically left our meals and when we went to pay we were asked by rude, unsmiling waitress number 2 for our table number. When we said sorry, we could not remember it we were asked to go back to our table and get it!!! This was a novel restaurant experience.

I was recounting the night to a friend who said she had been told by two chefs who worked there, on separate occasions, that the kitchen is extremely dirty and is cleaned only weekly rather than daily.

So, if you are after bad food, bad service and a bad dining experience all round, this is definitely the place to go.

My partner and l go to Sofia's at least once a month, never have we had any problems what so ever with anything or anyone there, the staff are so cheerful and helpful, the food is just fantastic, never have to wait longer than 10 minutes. and the view...wow We also order take away food weekly. Whether we take out or sit in its a cheap night out and I plan on spending our 1st year anniversary at Sofias just because we both love it there. Yes the meals are HUGE but never once have we experienced anything other than professional service with great smiles and attitudes. not often do you see people at work that really love what they do! The best thing is if you want to take your left overs home....you can!!! ok so you have to put the leftovers in a container yourself but hey isnt that the law? or would you prefer they do it just to give you something else to complain about? Great Job Sofia's keep it up...
Very happy customer

We took our grandmother there for her 78th bday with a group booking of 14 on a sunday, upon arrival they advised us that did not have our booking, after waiting 20 mins they put a few tables together, we sat down to find that we were basically sitting on top of each other and were nearly touching the people on the table behind us. We ordered our meals and I also asked them to heat my own food that I had bought due to being on lite n easy, the meal would only take 4 mins to heat however after 25 mins and asking several waiters the meal finally came back out - cold. The entree's came out and a few of them were not ordered on our table and we told them that, the main meals came out and were enormous, not a normal serve it was ridiculous, none of the meals were finished and asked to take them away, we were handed plastic containers and told to do it ourselves. They couldnt even get the drink orders right. Due to the tables being so close one of the waiters elbowed me in the head and I was in quite a bit of pain, he said sorry and walked off, 5 mins later he returned obvisously seeing I was in pain and offered me an ice pack which he then got another waitress to bring back. We then asked for the bday cake to be bought out and they did so but after asking several times we finally received a knife and plates to serve it on.Upon paying the bill they had charged us for meals and drinks that we didnt even order. This is a place that I would NOT recommend to anyone... We all felt pressured to eat and leave but in the end we couldnt wait to leave

Not a good experience...

We arrived at Sophia's on a Friday night and asked for a table for two. Even though the restaurant was only half full, we were brought to a table for four that already had a couple (that we obviously didn't know) sitting at it. After a few moments of speechless confusion, we insisted on being seated at a table of our own, rather than sharing one with complete strangers.

Within 30 seconds of us being re-seated we were asked by three separate waitresses if we were ready to order - we had not even had a chance to look properly at the menu! For the duration of our experience at Sophia's we constantly felt as thought we were being rushed. The whole restaurant has a "Just shove your gob, pay and get out" aura about it. When we had decided on what to eat we waited for 15 minutes before we finally had to call over a waitress so we could order.

We were rather mystified by the fact that all mains are served with vegetables, but if you wanted them served instead with chips and salad, it would cost you an extra $2.50. Could this be because everyone orders chips and salad, rather than vegies? When I asked the waitress the reason behind this, she tried telling me that it was because chips cost more to buy..... right.......

We ordered an entree, and were surprised to have it arrive within 10 minutes or ordering. We were even more surprised, however, when our mains arrived less than 2 minutes after that. We were not even a quarter of the way through the entree. The waitress could see quite clearly that we were still eating, but this did not stop her from bustling up to our table with two over-filled plates of slop and looking at us and our entree expectantly. I explained that we were still eating, and could she please take our mains back to the kitchen & put them under a warmer, but she refused and we were forced to balance our entree on the balustrade of the stairway we were seated next to in order to make room for the mains.

The meals were absolutely enormous but entirely without taste.

Of course, it was entirely impossible to eat the amount of food that was served us. I asked the waitress for a doggy bag, so that I could take the otherwise wasted food home to my dog who is slightly less choosy than an average human being. The waitress returned with a handful of take-away containers and instructed me to load them myself. I promptly told her that I was not quite that desperate to hold on to their particular brand of 'cuisine', so she could take back the containers, barely touched mains, and entree (which we had intended to continue eating, until the overall Sophia's experience decimated our appetite's completely) to the kitchen and put them in the bin where they belonged.

The only wine available by the glass was house wine - otherwise you had to order a full bottle, and the waiter mistakenly charged my credit card for $7.93 instead of $79.30, then realised his mistake and had to try again.

Rather than cause a scene & embarrass the restaurant I decided to go home, then phone and complain. I asked to be put through to the manager (who refused to tell me what his name was) and politely made my complaint. There was a brief pause and then the manager asked me "is that everything?" I replied that yes that was all. He replied with "Well, good - we don't need your business anyway." and hung up on meÖ

I live in the local area of frankston i was told about this restaurant that was only meters away from frankston pier. i decied to take my family there so i rang the restaurnt and tried to make a booking for six people and was told i would not need to book i was a bit concernd about this thinking that we would not get a table seeming that it was on a saturday night.
On arrival to the restaurant i saw that the car park was full and there were people standing out the front of the restaurnt thinking that we would not get a table. to my suprise we entered the restaurant and were greeted by a gentleman that looks like Robert out of everybody loves raymond we were told that we would have to wait a few minutes for our table to my suprise we waited no longer than a minute and were given a table near the window it was a bit tight but understanable the place was very busy
we were greated by the waitress who took our order and within ten minutes recieved our food. the meals were big, filling and very tasty, we were then convinced by the waitress to have coffee and sweets we orderd the chocalte mousse which was amazing served in a chocalte cup and gelati which was anormous we were very impressed. We had a great experince and the staff and mangment were very friendly and helpfull it is not a fine dining restaurnt but it is very very good.

Took my parents for their 50th wedding anniversary, and a party of five. Wet day, chose to eat inside. My father wanted something off the cafe menu, and was told okay, but we would all have to eat outside! Restaurant was totally empty at the time. Manager not flexible. We all left and ate at the Grand Hotel. Very nice there. Would not recommend Sofias to anyone.

Pretty much the only good thing i can say about sofia's is that the meals are massive, so if you are going out with someone who eats lots, then take them here for low pricing and big plates. And being on the pier does add a little to the dining experience, although if the weather is crap then it can detract. Apart from these things, its nothing special.
